Your right to see your data
Much medical record information is accessible online through your NHS account. However, you also have the right to make a formal subject access request.
Please note: the Freedom of Information Act 2000 does not cover personal health data. Use a subject access request under data protection law instead.
Making a subject access request
The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) guide covers:
- Preparing and submitting requests
- What to expect after submission
- Response timeframes for organisations
- Applicable fees
The Patients Association also provides guidance on seeing your medical records.
Right to data correction
You also have the right to correct inaccurate personal data. The ICO provides guidance on this process, though it is not always straightforward.
