What is proxy access?
Proxy access allows a GP surgery to authorise someone to help another person manage their healthcare and GP services. A proxy may:
- Order repeat prescriptions
- Book appointments
- Contact the surgery or speak with staff
- View test results or vaccination records
- Access all or part of the GP health record
How to get proxy access
Patients can request proxy access by completing the relevant form found under Online access to your record. Parents, family members, or carers may also manage services through linked profiles in the NHS App.
Reviewing proxy access — adults
When proxy access is granted with patient consent, it must be reviewed or withdrawn upon the patient’s request. Adults can remove access to their records at any time.
Reviewing proxy access — children and young people
Children aged 11 or over are usually considered to have the capacity to consent or refuse access. Parent and guardian access typically ends when a child turns 16. Most surgeries automatically stop online parent access between ages 11–14 to protect confidentiality.
